Over-planning your life away

The younger generations are particularly prone to such a planning frenzy. Those who are entering college and those who are about to head off to join the corporate world are fond of planning. It is understandable because fantasizing and dreaming about the future is exciting. However, there are several disadvantages of excessive planning, and one of them is to miss out on what’s currently happening in your life. Let’s say you’re on a business trip, and even while you’re on the trip, you’ve already started thinking and planning for another one the following week, missing out on the entire experience.

If you constantly plan, imagine, or conceptualize your life, you will feel anxious and often overwhelmed with the amount of things you are planning for the future. Of course, planning for the future is important, but when it becomes excessive, you miss out on living in the present. Going back to the algorithm I use, only 10% of your life should be future- based, where you plan out steps for the action you will take in the present – consisting of 80%, and of course the lessons from the past makes up the other 10%. Remember, that life is one big journey and it should not be filled with plans that only eventually become a distraction for another plan.

After all, what you’re ultimately looking for is joy and happiness, right? These come from a sense of accomplishment; a feeling that you’ve done your best to achieve your goal and have subsequently helped yourself and others. Plans mean nothing unless action is taken. They are just one of the steps to achieving your goals, which again comes from making a plan, and then being fully present when taking action.
